YB Dato' Sri Reezal Merican Naina Merican, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia, is undertaking a working visit to New York in conjunction with Malaysia's membership of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the term 2015-2016.
YB Deputy Foreign Minister will be participating in the UNSC Open Debate on “Countering the Narratives and Ideologies of Terrorism,” on 11 May 2016. The Open Debate will be presided by His Excellency Sameh Shoukry, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt, in Egypt’s capacity as President of the UNSC for the month of May 2016. It will provide a platform to discuss and exchange views on an international strategy for countering the narratives and ideologies of terrorist groups, particularly Da’esh, and explore a possible mechanism to coordinate, follow-up and mobilise international action and resources in countering terrorism.
YB Deputy Foreign Minister will also participate in the High Level Thematic Debate at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) entitled “In a World of Risks: A New Commitment,” on 10-11 May 2016. The Thematic Debate is organised by His Excellency Mogens Lykketoft, President of the UNGA. It will provide an opportunity for member states to engage and strategically address and examine ways to strengthen the role, coherence and performance of the United Nations’ architecture in the field of peace and security.
Malaysia attaches great importance to both debates and will continue to work closely with UN Member States in the maintenance of international peace and security.
