Security Council Press Statement on Terrorist Attack on French Newspaper

 

The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the barbaric and cowardly terrorist attack against the headquarters of French newspaper Charlie Hebdo, in Paris, France, on 7 January 2015, causing numerous deaths among journalists, media professionals and associated personnel, as well as of two policemen.

 

The members of the Security Council strongly condemned this intolerable terrorist act targeting journalists and a newspaper.

 

The members of the Security Council expressed their deep sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the Government of France.

 

The members of the Security Council underlined the need to bring perpetrators of these reprehensible acts of terrorism to justice.

 

The members of the Security Council reaffirmed the need to combat by all means, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations, threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts, and that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed.

Security Council Press Statement on Yemen

 

The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the horrific 7 January 2015 bomb attack at the Police Academy in Sana’a, Yemen, which killed at least 37, including Yemeni citizens who sought to serve their country in public service, and injured many more.

 

The members of the Security Council also condemned the recent bomb attacks, in Ibb on 31 December 2014 and in Dhamar on 4 January 2015.

 

The members of the Security Council expressed their deep sympathy and condolences to the families and friends of those killed and injured by these heinous acts, as well as to the people and the Government of Yemen.

 

The members of the Security Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security, and that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable regardless of their motivation, wherever and whenever, and by whomsoever committed.

 

The members of the Security Council reiterated their determination to combat all forms of terrorism, in accordance with its responsibilities under the Charter of the United Nations.

 

The members of the Security Council underlined the need to bring perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism to justice, and urged all States, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, to cooperate actively with the Yemeni authorities in this regard.

 

The members of the Security Council reminded States that they must ensure that measures taken to combat terrorism comply with all their obligations under international law, in particular international human rights, refugee and humanitarian law.
